I found STCP after my first year in Paris. Desiring to put my free time to good use, STCP was my first experience venturing out to serve my community directly \u2014 face to face, hand to hand.<\/p>\n

My move from Shanghai to Paris was jolting; both cities were major megapolises, Shanghai often dubbed the Paris of the East, yet it was clear that they faced distinctly different problems. The one I noticed first? Homelessness.<\/p>\n

From the airport to my apartment, from my walk between the supermarket and the school, I met someone in need of shelter at each corner. I remained shocked at the drastic difference between the two cities: in Shanghai, the last time I met a homeless person was when I was 9. In 2013. And so, despite despising early mornings, I signed myself up for STCP\u2019s morning food distributions.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

After months of interacting with STCP members \u2014 volunteers, leaders, those we served \u2014 and through various activities, I was lucky to witness the spirit of serving. The first thing that STCP taught me was how to serve: all action had to be purposeful. I was grateful for this emphasis \u2014 in a society that often sees altruism and aid for the purpose of social media likes and views, we often forget that\u00a0how<\/em>\u00a0we serve and our intention behind our actions all deeply alter its outcomes.<\/p>\n

As of June 2024, I have served on STCP\u2019s Engag\u00e9e newsletter as Editor in Chief for many editions, reading about members\u2019 unique stories, events, and admiring the tireless spirit of every single individual making up part of this organization. From the spotlights to interviews, the personal pieces to photos, I have witnessed the courage and determination central to STCP. From TJ and Peter, I\u2019ve learnt the crucial importance of good leadership. And from the other members of the Engag\u00e9e team, the spirit of teamwork and collaboration!<\/p>\n

I may be leaving STCP for college starting in the fall, but what I\u2019ve learned here will be retained for life; the core intention to serve, the infinite kindness, and an unstoppable desire to learn.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll certainly be back when I\u2019m in Paris. In the meantime, serve on!<\/p>\n
