Empathy, kindness and community building are the cornerstones of what we do here at STCP. These are also the same values that Jules Guedj wants instilled and preserved with the STCP Monthly Bookclub.<\/p>\n

Born out of a desire to maintain critical thinking skills in the age of AI, Jules, a high school sophomore, sees the book club as a way to share his love of reading and to showcase the importance of literature. The club started in January 2026 and is going strong, with members meeting monthly to discuss a particular book. Jules leads the discussions, a process he found daunting at first, not realising just how many people 15 people were, but has grown confident in his role, often preparing talking points and questions beforehand.<\/p>\n

The club has brought together an international bunch, which often leads to fascinating discussions as everyone brings their own experiences and stories. Jules mentioned that the open-mindedness and willingness of the participants often lead to eye-opening moments. There have even been instances where the participants find themselves going through the exact same thing as the characters of the book they\u2019re reading.<\/p>\n

Jules usually picks a list of books that have to do with social issues or themes that resonate with the mission of Serve the City. One of the memorable meetings he mentioned was when the book club read Poor Folk by Fyodor <\/b>Dostoevsky; its themes of poverty and love initiated a compelling discussion.<\/p>\n

Jules intends to make the book club last as long as possible with hopes of bringing it to other Serve the City branches as well. When asked about his favourite books that he thinks everyone should read, Jules immediately named Wuthering Heights by Emily Bront\u00eb, which is his absolute favourite book, followed by The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and Ana Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.<\/p>\n
