Volunteer Spotlight – Amina

Our volunteers are a diverse bunch. They come to us from the four corners of the globe, different ethnicities, ages, genders, religions, but the one thing they all share is a desire to help. They are the beating heart of Serve the City. They are dedicated individuals, role models to young people and future leaders. But who are they really? In our volunteer spotlight we introduce you to one of our volunteers and find out some unusual and interesting facts about them.

Let me introduce you to Amina.

Where were you born?

I was born in Bahawalpur, Pakistan.

What language(s) do you speak?

I speak Urdu, English and am now learning French.

What does STCP mean to you?

For me, STCP is a meaningful way to spend my time and get out of my bubble to learn more about the world around me. Through STCP, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with people from different walks of life, and I’m incredibly grateful for this experience, which has broadened my perspective and introduced me to such a wonderful community. Being a volunteer has also helped me feel like more of an active part of this city.

When you’re not volunteering, how do you spend your time?

I love working on different design projects, so that keeps me occupied, but mostly you can find me strolling in a park or around the city.

What is your favorite hobby?

I’ve taken up a lot of hobbies since I’ve been in Paris, such as Kathak ( a classical Indian dance) and running, but my primary hobby will always remain reading. We recently read East of Eden at the STCP book club, and it’s definitely one of my favourite reads. Heartwrenching but so, so good.

What is your favorite meal?

Chicken Pulao. It’s a Pakistani chicken and rice dish cooked in chicken broth.

With which person living or deceased would you like to eat that meal?

Chicken pulao was my grandmother’s signature dish, and I’d love to be able to share that meal with her again.

Which living person do you most admire?

I don’t think there’s just one person I admire; usually the people I admire share the common traits of sincerity and curiosity. I love people who are curious about others and the world around them.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I’d love to be able to act. Especially in the theatre, I think that’s the scariest thing and requires a confidence that I can’t fathom.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

I’d love to come back as a cat that lives in Istanbul; it’s a good life.
